How to Get to Newark Airport from Manhattan [Transit Guide]

Newark-Liberty International Airport is one of the three major airports serving the New York City area and is located in Newark, New Jersey. If you need to get to Newark Airport (EWR) from Manhattan, you will need to cross the Hudson River from NYC to Newark.

Midtown Manhattan to Newark Airport

From Midtown Manhattan, EWR Airport is 17 miles away and you will need to cross the Lincoln Tunnel/NJ-495 from Midtown Manhattan to New Jersey via Union City/Weehawken. Expect about to take 50 minutes to an hour to drive there. 

Fastest Route from Midtown Manhattan to Newark Airport:

Via NJ-495 W and I-95 S (tolls)

  1. Take the Lincoln Tunnel to merge onto NJ-495 to I-95
  2. From NJ-495, keep left to edit onto I-95 A/NJ Turnpike toward Newark
  3. From I-95, take Exit 14-14c for I-78 W
  4. Continue on I-78 for about 1.5 miles
  5. Then take the NJ-21 exit on the left towards US-1 S/US-9 S/US-22 S/Newark
  6. Keep left and Newark Airport will be on your left-hand side

NYC/NJ Transit to Newark Airport

NYC has a thorough transit system therefore arriving via NYC transit is not a problem. Taking public transit will tack on about 20 minutes to your trip when compared to driving. Here are some of the easiest ways to get to Newark Airport via NYC and NJ Transit:

From Midtown Manhattan to Newark via NJ Transit Bus

  1. Start at the Port Authority Bus Terminal on 8th Avenue and W 41st Street
  2. Catch the 112 Bus and get off at North and Dowd Ave
  3. Walk 1 block west to the bus stop at US1 & 9 at North Ave
  4. Catch the 62 Bus and it will drop you off at Terminal A
  5. From Terminal A, you can catch the AirTrain to any Terminal
34 Street - Penn Station

Midtown Manhattan to Newark Airport via MTA NYC Transit & NJ Transit

Penn Station in NYC is going to be your gateway to Newark Airport. If you are not within walking distance of Penn Station, the closest train stop to Penn Station is 34 Street – Penn Station. 

  1. Take the 1,2, or 3 train to 34 Street – Penn Station stop. 
  2. Head south to cross W 34 Street and Penn Station will be about half a block away
  3. From Penn Station, take a train on the Northeast Corridor Line or North Jersey Coast Line to Newark Railroad Airport Station
  4. The Newark Railroad Airport Station is direct across from the AirTrain Station
  5. Catch the AirTrain and it will pass through all the EWR terminals

Newark Airport Express Bus from Midtown Manhattan

If you do not have a car or prefer not to drive, another alternative is taking the Newark Airport Express to Newark Airport. This is a private bus/shuttle service that transports passengers to and from Midtown Manhattan to EWR daily. There are three locations in Midtown Manhattan where you can catch the shuttle:

  • Grand Central Station on 41st Street
  • Bryant parking on 42nd Street
  • Port Authority Bus Terminal on 41st Street

To get back to Midtown Manhattan, the Newark Airport Express picks up passengers at Terminals A, B, and C.

Lower Manhattan to Newark Airport

EWR Airport is about 12 miles from Lower Manhattan you will need to cross the Holland Tunnel/I-78 into New Jersey via Jersey City. Estimate about a 30-35 minute drive from Lower Manhattan to Newark Airport.

The Fastest Routes from Lower Manhattan to Newark Airport:

Via I-78 to Pulaski Skyway and US-1 S/US-9 S

  1. Take the I-78 W/Holland Tunnel to enter New Jersey
  2. Continue on I-78, after about 2 miles you will see signs for I-139 W/Pulaski Skyway and Jersey City on the left two lanes
  3. Stay on the left two lanes to stay on I-139 following signs for Pulaski Skyway/Route 1-9
  4. Continue to stay on your left for US-1 S/US-9 S for about 7 and a half miles
  5. Get off at the exit for Newark Liberty Airport

Via I-78 W to NJ Turnpike and US-1 S/US-9 S (tolls)

  1. Take the I-78 W/Holland Tunnel to enter New Jersey
  2. Continue on I-78, after about 2 miles, you will see signs for I-78 W/New Jersey Turnpike, stay on your right to continue in I-78 W
  3. Take exit 57 toward US-1 S/US-9 S
  4. Use the left 2 lanes to take the exit toward Newark Liberty International Airport

Lower Manhattan to Newark Airport via MTA NYC Transit & PATH

From Lower Manhattan or Brooklyn, you will need to take the PATH from the World Trade Center station. If you are in Lower Manhattan, take the E train from Canal Street to World Trade Center to catch the PATH. The PATH will take you from the World Trade Center Station to the Newark Penn Station. 

  1. From the World Trade Center, take a PATH NJ Transit train to Newark Penn Station
  2. From the Newark Penn Station, head to the Bus Lanes on Raymond Blvd.
  3. Catch the 62 Bus – Route Elizabeth via EWR Terminals
  4. The 62 Bus will leave you at Terminal A where you can also catch the AirTrain to all terminals

Alternatively, you can catch the R or W train from Canal Street to Cortland Street. It is about a 3 minute walk to the World Trade Center where you can catch a PATH train.

MTA NYC Transit to Newark Airport Express Bus from Lower Manhattan/Brooklyn

The Newark Airport Express is a great alternative and simple way to get to EWR but there are no pick-up locations in Lower Manhattan or Brooklyn. You have a couple of options to get up to Midtown and catch the Newark Airport Express:

  • Take the Q, R, or W train from Canal Street to Time Sq – 42 Station and walk to the Port Authority Bus Terminal on 41st Street
  • Take the A, C, or E train to 42 St – Port Authority Bus Terminal and walk to the Port Authority Bus Terminal on 41st Street
